Library Policies
Who comes to the library and how often?
Kindergarten and first-grade students attend the library for a lesson and book checkout every four school days. Second-grade students attend library twice a week for a lesson and checkout once. Third through Fifth grade students have book checkout options weekly and lessons are flexibly scheduled with their teachers.
How many books does my child get to check out?
Junior Kindergarteners and Kindergarteners have the option to borrow a maximum of two books simultaneously. Students may checkout new books as long as their previous items have been returned.
Students in first grade are able to check out three items and second through fifth grade are permitted to borrow up to five books at a time.
When do books need to be returned?
The due date for all books is two weeks from the date of checkout. If a student wishes to extend their borrowing period, they can bring the book to the library for renewal.
What happens if library items are lost or damaged?
Students must pay for books that are lost or damaged. Simply write a check to Birmingham Public Schools and in the memo line write "Harlan Library" and send in to Mrs. Coleman. Cash may also be sent in lieu of a check. Thank you for helping to teach responsibility to our Huskies.
When is a book overdue?
When a book is borrowed for a period exceeding two weeks, it is considered overdue. If a book remains overdue for 90 days, it will be classified as lost and will require payment. However, if the book has already been paid for and is subsequently found within 90 days, a refund will be issued.
